TAC Mobility Project Summary: Calgary Courts Centre

The Need

For more than 20 years, the need for a new courthouse in Calgary to meet the growing needs of the area has been studied.

Calgary's Court of Appeal, the Court of Queen's Bench and the four divisions of the Provincial Court are located in five separate facilities. Apart from the confusion caused by navigating five separate facilities, all courts are near or over capacity and there is continued pressure to expand due to population and business growth.

Project Features

The west block development project between 6th and 7th Avenue and between 5th and 6th Street SW consists of two atrium linked towers with a 24-floor north tower and a 20-floor south tower encompassing 73 courtrooms, as well as an underground parkade for 220 vehicles.

Approximately 600 people are employed in the new courthouse, including 75 justices and judges, over 180 Security personnel and approximately 360 Government, Library and external agencies staff people.

TAC Mobility’s Contribution

The 2-way Radio Division with over 10 years experience in major projects was contracted to provide an “in building” communications system guaranteeing 100% coverage for public safety agencies and security personnel 2-way radios. Future deployment to support additional services such as cellular phone and provincial communication networks are included in the engineering design of the (BDA) “Bi-Directional Amplifier” & (DAS) “Distributed Antenna System”.
System Installation / Service

Three dedicated teams were assigned to the project to ensure the work was completed within a condensed installation period. Installation crews pulled over 32,000 ft. of antenna cable, mounted 336 ceiling antenna’s and multiple BDA’s in strategic locations throughout the 1,000,000 square foot facility. The system is installed in such a way to be “ecstatically pleasing” (invisible) to the general public and staff working in the building. Long term support in the areas of 24/7 on-site technical service and external system monitoring were also key to the design acceptance.
